Our tutorials aim to help users become more familiar with Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office products. These range from quick tips to more detailed explanations on how to do things. This is a sample of what you can find here.

The Microsoft Office 2007 Ribbon

In Office 2007 Microsoft has reorganised the menus and introduced what is called the Ribbon. The Ribbon is a bar across the top which organises choices into groups of icons in a particular category.

When you open Word, Excel or PowerPoint the first tab is the Home tab. In Office 2007 items are organised in tabs according to what they do. When you click on a tab each displays a list of icons.

There are also two other elements that allow users to perform other important tasks like printing and saving documents. The first of these is the Office Button as it is known. This is the very large button at the top. Clicking on this shows the menu that Office 2003 users will probably recognise as the File Menu.

Above the Office Button is the Quick Access Toolbar. This allows you to add choices you use regularly. In this example of a Quick Access Toolbar users will probably recognise the New, Save and Open icons as some of the options.

File Types

The default file types in Microsoft Office 2007 have changed and are as follows

Office 2007Office 2003 and earlier
Microsoft Word – files end in .docxDefault File type ended in .doc
Microsoft Excel – files end in . xlsxDefault File type ended in .xls
Microsoft Access – files end in . accdbDefault File type ended in .mdb
Microsoft PowerPoint – files end in .pptxDefault File type ended in .ppt

Note: Users already familiar with Office 2003 will recognise the standard formatting and other basic options in the icons displayed. All of the items are grouped together in the way the menus in 2003 would have shown them. Clicking on each of the tabs in return will display a different set of icons.
